Iceberg Casualties – Ship Names starting with “D & E”

Clicking on the vessel name if hyperlinked will open a pdf document giving all the information known about the vessel and the collision event. The format is slightly distorted in some places, unfortunately, but should not be a problem. Clicking on the hyperlinks in the Image column will open any relevant images of the ship and in some cases an ice chart showing the location of the collision; S = image or illustration of the ship, D = image taken of around the time of the accident or damage to the vessel, C = ice chart showing a the approximate conditions at the time.

1. In Convoy ON 181. Appears to be an event worth investigating in a bit more detail. Striking a growler appears to be a likely cause and the ‘official’ take on it but one account expresses some doubt. The deaths were due to falling into the water while transferring to the rescue vessel. Again there seems to be some discrepancy in the numbers with 2 or 3 succumbing some time later. However, there appears to be seven memorials. See for instance: https://wrecksite.eu/wreck.aspx?166758 ; Convoy ON 181 Commodore’s Narrative – warsailors.com ; http://www.harry-tates.org.uk/tgtw.html
2. One of the 15 ships of Frobisher’s Third Voyage in search of the Northwest Passage. Struck a rock of ice off The Queen’s Foreland (Resolution Island) near the entrance to Frobisher Bay.
3. Date in 1900 unknown and so far even the year is unconfirmed. Suspect that the vessel was lost without known cause and the story of a single survivor was just fabrication.
4. Name of vessel unconfirmed
5. Date approximate and location in table above amended to reflect the position of 250 miles off Belle Isle as given in the Evening Telegram (T2).
6. Arrived Placentia July 14 so collision likely around the 13th.
7. One person killed and another injured when a warping rope parted.
8. There are some discrepancies between the Evening Telegram and the the Harbor Grace Standard reports in dates, position and ship names. The Telegram appears to be the most accurate, however the name Eugenie may be the correct one as the name appears several times in other ice reports about that time. Unfortunately it does not appear to be listed in Lloyd’s Register.
9. Table updated with newly found info regarding date, location, and size of berg.
10. According to the Evening Telegram 26 October 1897 (T1) collision occurred 41 miles off Cape Bonavista on the 22nd. Date and position in table above have been amended accordingly. The vessel is listed in Lloyd’s Register as a 100 ton wooden schooner and further particulars can be found at https://hec.lrfoundation.org.uk/archive-library/lloyds-register-of-ships-online
11. The full article from Quebec Morning Chronicle July 23, 1847: Twenty Lives Lost.-The packet-ship Eulalia, belonging to St. Sebastian, while on her passage from Havana to Galway, was overwhelmed by an iceberg, in lat. 42, 18 N., long. 52, on the 21st ultimo. She had thirty-seven passengers (a great many of whom were females) on board, with a crew of sixteen, including the master. Two boats, containing the captain, fourteen of the crew, and fourteen passengers, succeeded in getting clear of the wreck, but the third, with twenty persons in it, most of whom were women, was drawn down with the sinking vessel, and every soul perished. The boat was fastened to the wreck by a rope, which the crew in their fright had forgotten to cast off, and it was impossible to cut it, the passengers having no proper implement. On the following day, the remaining boats were picked up by the schooner Newport, belonging to Stockton, and their crew taken on board, which vessel reached Galway on Monday last. The loss of the Eulalia and cargo is estimated at £25,000.
12. Admiral Robert Peary’s polar expedition ship. A lengthy article at The Evening Telegram 1 Oct 1908 p.7 cols.2-5
13. New Addition (15 April 2023). As part of Convoy SC 38, Sydney, Nova Scotia – UK, Greek vessel of 4643 tons, built 1910 as the Rendsburg , and loaded with steel and lumber struck a berg in the Strait Of Belle Isle and returned to Sydney, Nova Scotia in tow. Further vessel specifications and info at https://www.krigsseilerregisteret.no/en/skip/7301?page=0. Convoy was paired with HX 140 and altogether at least 7 vessels struck icebergs in the passage though the Strait. While bergs were innumerable around the area of Belle Isle it was an unusually light season further south. Collision position is estimated. Unfortunately most of the microfilm records are illegible: https://heritage.canadiana.ca/view/oocihm.lac_reel_c5512/5187 and dates for all collisions uncertain. See also: http://www.convoyweb.org.uk/hx/index.html and http://www.warsailors.com/convoys/hx140.html . Vessels striking bergs at this time are Oregon 1 and Malvina of Convoy HX140, and Agia MarinaArmathiaBoltonhallDimitrios ChandrisGloxinia and Senta of Convoy SC 38. Also to be noted is the Svend Foyn of HX 140 which sank with loss of life in 1943 after collision with an iceberg.
14. As part of Convoy ONS 242 escort HMS Prince Rupert was ahead on the starboard side of the convoy when it came across an iceberg. It gave out flares and all kinds of of warnings but British tanker Daphnella, 8078 tons, built 1938, continued unheeded at 7 kt and rammed the iceberg just before dawn at 0512z. Continued with convoy apparently relatively unharmed. The estimated position above was calculated from course and speed from the 0400z position. Naval signals can be viewed at https://heritage.canadiana.ca/view/oocihm.lac_reel_c5530/721 and by changing 721 to 676 and 727 as an example for others of interest. Ship photos and particulars can be viewed at https://www.helderline.com/tanker/daphnella-1 or http://www.tynebuiltships.co.uk/D-Ships/daphnella1938.html
15. New addition as of 19 Dec 2023. Schooner out of Little Bay struck berg and sank. Reported from Battle Harbour so presumably in that area. Location estimated but there had been previous reports of numerous bergs around Hopedale. Crew saved. Ref.: Evening Advocate, 27 August 1917, p.4 col.7 bottom.
16. (New addition as of 4 Jan 2024). The 473 ton wooden sealing vessel was built in Dundee in 1870. It struck a “huge” iceberg a glancing glow in thick fog in the Strait of Belle Isle between Henley Harbour and St. Peter’s Island (lat/lon estimated) carrying away bowsprit, figurehead, cutwater and other headgear. Arrived St. John’s 31 July from Humbermouth for repairs. Photo of ship available at https://collections.mun.ca/digital/collection/m_job/id/2446/.
17. (Amended 23 Jan 2024). Date and approximate location of collision amended in table above according to newspaper report in T1. Eleanora Maersk was a vessel of 1927 tons built in 1895. The vessel was repaired, presumably at Botwood, and sailed for Greenhithe (River Thames) with 2330 tons of pulp on June 29 (Daily News 30 June, p.10 col.4).
18. New addition as of 24 January 2024. The SS Damara was a 1779 ton steamer built by A Stephen & Sons, Glasgow in 1885 and owned by Furness, Withy & Co. It appears the ship hit an iceberg shortly after leaving St. John’s for Liverpool on the night of July 11. The position and date of the iceberg sighting comes from its report to the U.S. Hydrographic Bulletin although there is no mention of collision which is supplied by the newspaper reports, T1.
19. Updated with T1 & T2 11 Mar 2024. Apparently on her maiden voyage. Photo of ship available at https://www.wrecksite.eu/img/wrecks/dalryan_ss.jpg
20. Updated with T1 27 Mar 2024 in which the one casualty, Chesley Grandy, later died of head injuries.
