Immense ice fields at east from the Strait of Belle Isle to the south of Groais Islands, hindering the vessels from landing; they did not reach their harbours until late in June.. Feb 12 The “Silesia” fast in the ice at Shulan (?). (NYMR).
Feb 14 SS “Etna” from Halifax to Liverpool 47N 47W passed several fields of ice, north and south, and a small berg in a close packed field. (LL).
Feb 15 SS “Aleppo” [for Boston – LL] from 2-11pm passed to the southward of immense fields and bergs of ice. Her position at noon that day by dead reckoning was 4732’N 4633’W. The fields extended 100m E & W. (NYMR).
Feb 17 “Glad Tidings” ran with ice 4810’N 18[!]10’W. (NYMR).

Feb 20 SS “City of Washington” from New York to Liverpool 46N 47W passed through the southern edge of a field of ice. (LL).
Feb 23 SS “City of Baltimore” from New York to Liverpool 44N 49W passed several small bergs. (LL).
Feb 24 SS “Helvetia” from New York to Liverpool 4348’N 4844’W a number of bergs; last of them seen in 46N 47W. (LL).

Mar 1 “Annie” from Liverpool and the “Dora” from Pernambuco arrived at St. John’s, had both been in danger in the ice off the harbour. (LL).
Mar 1 Issue: Narrows full of ice. The schooner “Phoco” [“Phoca” – Newf] from Oporto struck a rock in Hay Cove and sank immediately. The “Three Sisters” put back to sea again. (PL).

Mar 24 “Prima Donna” at New York from Liverpool saw large quantities of ice on the Banks [ on the 5th was in 49N 33W]. (LL).

Apr 3 Schooner “Ready” of Liverpool, NS bound for the seal fishery was totally lost in the ice at St. Paul’s Is. [this is from an issue in LL 1871 but presumably referring to this year]. (LL).
Apr 5 St. John’s: Accounts from the seal fishery report that a small vessel owned by Mr Rorke has been lost in Bonavista Bay, and the “Netherton” in Trinity Bay. (LL).
Apr 7 Halifax: The Cape Breton News states, “A sailing schooner arrived at Port au Basques Mar 27 with 10,000 seals; she reported plenty of seals but a scarcity of ice. It is reported that on Mar 30, 35 vessels were jammed in Bona Vista Bay, and one steamer was lost. [seen ashore at Cape Fr (LL). Apr 11 Greenock: A telegram from St. John’s gives the loss of the “Mary Jane” on the ice at the seal fishery. (LL).

Apr 12 St. John’s: The following vessels engaged in the seal fishery are reported as lost: “Portia”, “Ida”, and “Diana” of Catalina, “Superb” and “Revenge” of Harbour Grace, “Gulnare” and “Starlight” of Carbonear, and “Fanny Smallwood” of Greenspond. (LL).

May 9 St. John’s: Additional vessels lost in the ice during March and April: “Lily” from Fogo, “Dina” [ no port], schooner “Dominion” from Carbonear, brig “Success” from Pools Is, all belonging to St. John’s. (LL).
May 13 Quebec: The “Diver” arrived from Dalhousie detained 4 days by icebergs. (LL).
May 16 Arichat: News from Harbour Grace that “John Nicole” engaged in the seal fishery has been lost; “Jane White” arrived at Bay Roberts with 500 seals, in damaged state, prior to Apr 28. (LL).
May 18 The barque “William Allen”, from Liverpool to Harbour Grace was stove in by ice off Cape St.Francis and sunk in about 20 minutes. (PL).
May 19 “Glencoe” from Cadiz to Harbour Grace was spoken to; had been in the ice 4 days. (LL).
May 22 Sailing sealer “Fanny Smallwood” lost ~5m SE of Gooseberry Is., Bonavista Bay. (NW).
