1943 Season
Oct 29 Last eastbound steamer through the Strait of Belle Isle. (WBB)
Dec The entire St. Lawrence area was open until well after the middle of December at which time a severe storm with low temperatures swept through the gulf. Some local ice formed largely in sheltered bays. By the 30th the Strait of Belle Isle was all but blocked. (IIP 1946 p15)
Dec 14 Belle Isle Strait free of ice. (IIP 1946 p27)

Jan Heavier pack ice from Labrador worked in to the Gulf of St. Lawrence early in January. During the month, the pack ice, augmented by locally formed winter ice, pushed through the gulf and out through Cabot Strait. All cross-gulf shipping was at a standstill until the spring break-up. Patches of heavy field ice from the gulf, rafted by wind were reported at a position of 30 miles SW of the Miquelon Islands on January 24. (IIP 1946 p15)
Jan 3 Last departure of the season from Quebec. (WBB)

Jan 25 Massachusetts, Buzzards Bay, due to ice conditions numerous buoys are out of position and extinguished in Cleveland Ledge and Hog Island Channels in the approach to Cape Cod Canal. The buoys will be replaced as soon as possible. Vessels are requested to proceed with extreme caution in these areas. (HB #2787 Feb 3)

Feb Throughout the month heavy field ice drifting from the gulf constantly choked Cabot Strait and occasionally closed in on the Newfoundland coast at Port Aux Basques blocking that harbour. Heavy ice was blown E to lon. 57°W and on one occasion drifted S past lat. 45°N. Except for a few days, about 4 to 7 February, vessels bound for Halifax to Argentia keeping S of lat. 45°N until E of lon 57°W would have encountered no heavy ice. The master of one vessel reported that the ice working through the Cabot Strait was the heaviest since 1935. On February 13 what appeared to be a berg was sighted 8 miles E of Cape Percy, Cape Breton, later reported as a rafted floe. On 17th loose strings were reported in the vicinity of 44°N and 57°W. Slush and pancake ice was forming quite generally at that time in coastal waters E to Cape Race and lasted only a short time in offshore waters. Prevailing westerlies prevented ice from moving westward along the S coast of Cape Breton Island and Nova Scotia. (IIP 1946 p15-16)

Mar In March heavy ice continued to push out of the gulf through Cabot Strait. During the first half of the month the ice remained mostly N of a line from a position at 45°N 60,W to St. Pierre, but occasional patches were blown almost to the Miquelon Islands and to within a short distance of Newfoundland south coast. On 17th loose stringy floes were observed extending from the direction of Cabot Strait to a position at 46°15’N 56°W. This ice lasted at least 3 days and was probably the beginning of the major ice movement from the gulf during March, which culminated in patches of field ice reaching 44°20’N 56°45’W on the 26th. A short distance to the NW of this position the ice pieces averaged 2’ to 5’ thick with hummocks to 6’ above water. The westerly winds kept the ice from drifting W along the S coast of Cape Breton. Apr During early April the ice outside Cabot Strait slowly receded from its maximum extension of March but it opened up considerably. By the 19th the outer limits were again inside a line from 45°N 60°W to St. Pierre. By the end of the month no ice remained in Cabot Strait outside a line from Cape North to Cape Ray. By the 1st a channel was broken but not navigable in the St. Lawrence River from Montreal to Quebec. Local navigation was possible from Quebec to Cape Chat. Pack ice filled the gulf. On 16th navigation was possible through the Gut of Canso into Northumberland Strait. The gulf was still closed, although on normal years it opens by about the middle of April, an was navigable on 4 April of the preceding year. The southern and western part of the gulf opened up rapidly between the 16th and 23rd. On the 24th a navigable track via the Gut of Canso, north coast of PEI, and the western part of the Gulf was open to the River and Quebec. On 26th the Northumberland Strait route could be used. At the unusually late date of 30th the regular shipping track from Cape Ray to the St. Lawrence River opened, and navigation was possible to Montreal. (IIP 1946 p16-17)

May During early May the southern limits of the field ice in the Gulf of St. Lawrence receded rapidly. By the 10th it was well N of the Bay of Islands and no longer threatened the shipping lanes. Some field ice remained in the Strait of Belle Isle, however, until after 16th of June. The gradual clearing of the gulf from the S and W in the 1943 season is a sharp contrast to that of the 1942 season in which the Cape Ray to Fame Point track opened first, and the Gut of Canso – Northumberland Strait track was blocked by ice until early May. This is in part due to the abnormally heavy westerly and southwesterly winds of 1943 that were so effective in keeping the ice moving W along the S coast of Nova Scotia. (IIP 1946 p17)
