Jan 22 A dispatch in the Cape Breton News, dated Cape North, January 22 says, – The drift ice made its appearance off the Cape to-day, for the first time this year. Bay St. Lawrence filled. (NS 04/02/1861 p4#4)
Apr 8 Plaister Cove, two vessels, first of the season passed northward this morning. Strait clear of ice. Bay blocked between Cape George and Port Hood. (AR 27/04/1861 p2 #3)
May 11 Prince Edward Island – We regret to learn that the telegraph cable between Capes Traverse and Tormentine is found to be cut by pieces of ice – the first break is in 5 fathoms of water, about 2 miles from the New Brunswick shore, where the cable is completely severed – the shore end had been under run and buoyed, but the portions carried way, in the middle has not been found.
