January/February

Feb 4 (from St. John’s): A close packed barrier more than 7m wide tonight barred St. John’s harbour to inward and outward shipping. SS “Esmond” locked in the ice 3m off shore. SS “Fort Amherst” was 3m off Cape Spear today. Steamers “Newfoundland” and “Wisa” held in harbour [departed 9th, “Fort Amherst” arrived 6th]. “Esmond” from Manchester had bow plates dented and propeller blade tips damaged.
Feb 5 4758’N 4948’W heavy field ice to the westward for a distance of 25m.
Feb 10 Vessel damaged by ice outside Sydney.
Feb 24 (from St. John’s): This harbour is completely blocked with ice since Feb 17. The steamers “Fort Amherst” and “Esmond” unable to leave and SS “Newfoundland” unable to enter until change of wind occurs. Steamers “Nova Scotia” and Ravenfjell” anchored 50m off Cape Race.

Mar 1 SS “Esmond” for London from St. John’s lost propeller in the ice.
Mar 8 SS “Delia” from St. John’s Mar 6 for Halifax was abandoned ~9m west of Cape Race leaking badly after being crushed by heavy ice.
Mar 8 4444’N 5232’W a large growler with sharp edges.
Mar 10 SS “Llanwern” at St. John’s with slight damage to bow plates by contact with ice.
Mar 13 SS “Kirsten Maersk” from St, John’s to London put back with bow plates damaged by ice, making some water.
Mar 27 (from St. John’s): SS “Ungava” on seal fishery with rudder post twisted and steering gear damaged by drift ice; “Neptune” going to assist.
Mar 29 SS “Frost” at Harbour Grace from Antwerp with propeller damaged by ice.

April

Apr 10 SS “Imogene” arrived St. John’s with rudder post twisted.
Apr 28 SS “Beothic” drifting helplessly with a broken propeller blade, in heavy ice 100m north of here near Cape Bonavista; SS “Terra Nova” trying to reach her.

Jul 17 SS “Cairnglen” hit berg in Strait of Belle Isle; suffered minor damage. (IIP59).
