Feb 12 Auxiliary fishing schooner “Gertrude M. Fauci” reported struck a berg 150m due E of Cape Sable and leaking badly. Crew picked up and later transferred to another vessel 60m SE of Halifax.

Mar — SS “Thetis” damaged and leaking badly in heavy ice [no location]. (NW).
Mar 3 At Twillingate it is clear with light northwest winds. The bay is full of ice. (DN).
Mar 3 A message from Fogo, yesterday stated that the wind was northwest and that ice was to be seen in all directions.(DN).
Mar 4 At Point Armour it was fine and clear with temperature at -3C. Ice was heavy and close packed and no seals were sighted. (DN).
Mar 4 Belle Island reported local field ice was in all directions with many large open patches. (DN).
Mar 4 Cook’s Harbour reports the ice was tight to the land. (DN).
Mar 5 A string of Northern ice flow was seen off the narrows. It was the first sighted off here this year. (DN).
Mar 5 Battle Harbour;local level shift ice was to be seen in all directions. (DN).
Mar 7 Twillingate ice is 4 miles off. (DN).
Mar 7 Point armour; field ice in all directons ,no open patches and no signs of seals. (DN).
Mar 7 No changes in ice conditions for places already mentioned. (DN).
Mar 10 Battle Harbour; loose ice about 8 miles off. Ice still heavy in northern parts of Newfoundland. (DN).
Mar 11 Bonavista; ice was moving out of the bay. (DN).
Mar 12 MV “Bonnington Court” at North Sydney from Hull with slight plate damage after encounter with drift ice on voyage.
Mar 12 Battle Harbour; no ice in sight. (DN).
Mar 12 The ice is slowly moving away from land (DN).
Mar 19 Ice is pretty much offshore. (DN).
Mar 23 Ice is still loose and more offshore around the coastal areas of Newfoundland. (DN).

Apr 3 Bonavista- no ice reported; Cook’s Harbour- ice was coming out of the strait; Twillingate- a few loose strings of ice were about 10 miles offshore; Fogo- no ice; Horse Island- pans of ice are present, but no seals have been seen. (DN).
Apr 8 Ice conditions continue. No seals and little ice off shore is being experienced. (DN).
Apr 13 Cook’s Harbour- The Straits were full of ice. (DN).
