Mar 15 SS “Viking” while on sealing trip and motion picture service was destroyed by explosion and fire when off Horse Is; 34 lives were lost and 65 were adrift on the ice floes. (NYMR).
Mar 15 SS “Viking” blew up and sank 8m E of Horse Is., White Bay. 24 of 147 persons killed. (NW).
Mar 20 Auxiliary schooner “Sir William” damaged by ice off Horse Is., became waterlogged, was abandoned, set on fire and sank. Crew picked up by SS “Eagle”. (NYMR).
Mar 31 The sealer SS “Viking” blew up 8m off Horse Island, White Bay. Some of the survivors walked ashore. (JPA ).

SS “Imogene” sailed Mar 9 from St. John’s. Scattered ice past Wadhams 10th, ice tight at Horse Islands; 12th, heavy ice butting and blasting 15m SW Gray Islands. 14th Bell Island. 15th, 5m S of Point Amour, close packed. 18th, jammed near Gull Is., rivets started, leaking No.2 hold. 19th, jammed, supplies and men sent to Horse Is. Fed 10 survivors of “Viking”. 22nd, 7m E by N Horse Is., situation unchanged. 24th, 17m SE½S Gull Is., Cape John, close packed. Apr 2, near Wolf Is.; 7th, Round Hill Is.; 9th, near Venison Is., ice close packed, 2 and 1/3 blades of propeller gone. Apr 13, 5224’N 5402’W ice all gone to pieces. 17th, 5112’N 55W ice loose. Sealing generally around 52N 55W ice loose, returned 23rd. (#805).
