Feb 13 Mention of gulf ice.
Feb 17 SS “Stockholm” from 4634’N 4701’W to 4627’N 4712’W passed some growlers and field ice.
Feb 25 SS “Wells City” 4647’N 4718’W passed large patches of field ice and in 4617’N 4837’W a patch of field ice.
Feb 26 SS “Kentucky”, bow damaged 20′ and bow plates damaged; being towed in stern first by icebreaker “Terra Nova”; also, rudder carried away, in ice 120m off Newfoundland coast.
Feb 28 SS “De Grasse” 4649’N 4727’W crossed 3 fields of ice.

March

Mar 1 SS “Hoosac” 4810’N 4630’W passed narrow strings of slob ice.
Mar 11 SS “Hillglade” 4834’N 4615’W passed a berg and 4 growlers.
Mar 16 SS “Hillcroft” 4711’N 5045’W leaking in forehold. [ice ?]
Mar 20 4452’N 4835’W field ice.
Mar 22 SS “Bird City” from 4820’N to 4905’W to 46N 4950’W very heavy field ice rafted in ridges.
Mar 23 SS “Stavangerfjord” from 4420’N 5708’W to 4403’N 5740’W [ice field?]

Apr 4 Trawler “Orizaba” 6103’N 1030’W floating ice ~40′ long and 3′ high. (JH).
Apr 6 SS “George Cochrane” arrived St. Pierre slightly damaged by ice.
Apr 8 St Paul’s Is: Light open ice everywhere; Cape Ray: Heavy close packed ice everywhere.
Apr 9 The “Seal” caught fire ~6m E of Baccalieu and sank landing 60 – 70 men on the ice. (JF).
Apr 10 SS “Seal” on fire NE of Baccalieu, exploded and sank. Crew on 2 pans of ice, rescued by SS “Eagle”. NW
Apr 14 4723’N 4403’W, 4 bergs and growlers [cf. IIP].
Apr 14 SS “Kyle” reports heavy unbroken sheet extending from the coast of Newfoundland to Scatari Is.
Apr 16 4426’N 4542’W a berg.
Apr 20 The western edge of ice field on the northern part of the Grand Banks is reported to lie 100m E by N from Cape Race. A St. John’s sealer reports that the Arctic field ice is closer inshore than usual and that there are not a great number of bergs.
Apr 21 4559’N 4740’W, 3 bergs; 4714’N 4446’W a berg; 4740’N 4615’W a small berg; 46όN 4703’W field ice, growlers and 6 small bergs.
Apr 22 Belle Isle: Heavy open ice distant, 86 bergs and numerous growlers.
Apr 23 Schooner “Yves” from La Palisse to St. Pierre wrecked by ice ~95 m off St. Pierre. (PR).
Apr 26 [cf. IIP] 4705’N 4640’W to 4645’N 4730’W field ice and numerous bergs.
Apr 28 SS “George L. Torain” from Grangemouth for Montreal arrived St. John’s to repair damage caused by ice off the Grand Banks.
