February

Feb Issue MWR: The southernmost ice, also the easternmost, a berg, observed on the 1st in 4524’N 4718’W. Large quantities of heavy field ice were reported in 3701’N 7538’W on the 19th; a berg was observed 15m east of Cape Race on the 25th. For the current month ice was reported only on 5 dates, the 1st, 3rd, 16th, 19th and 25th.

Mar Issue MWR: The southernmost ice reported, a large field of ice noted on the 25th in 4443’N 5715’W, and the easternmost ice observed, a berg of moderate size noted on the 31st in 4451’N 4838’W. Ice was reported on 4 dates during the current month. A great deal of slush ice, closely packed about half the time, was encountered near the coasts of Newfoundland; but the ice was thin compared with former years. Much heavy ice was encountered in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Apr Issue MWR: The southernmost ice reported, a quantity of broken field ice observed on the 28th in 3922’N 6603’W and the easternmost ice reported, several large bergs, on the 23rd in 47N 4508’W.
Apr 22 SS “Croma” 45N 4845’W a berg 70′ high and 160′ long.
Apr 24 SS “Maasdam” 4315’N 4923’W a huge berg.
Apr 24 SS “Geestemunde” 4451’N 4850’W a berg 120′ high.
Apr 25 SS “La Bourgogne” 4249’N 5159’W a large berg.
Apr 28 SS “Ulunda” at St. John’s passed 56 icebergs off the Banks, right in the track of ocean steamers.
Apr 29 SS “Urbino” from Sunderland to Baltimore 4040’N 59?41’W sighted 2 large bergs.
Apr 30 SS “Lumen” 4544’N 4527’W a large berg.


May 1 SS “Carlisle City” from London to Boston 4224’N 5120’W passed a berg having 3 peaks, ~120′ high and 750′ long.
May 2-3 SS “Pavonia” from Liverpool to Boston 4232’N 4928’W passed ~1m southward of a very large berg; ~6 hours later passed to the northward of a large berg.
May 3 SS “Templemore” from Liverpool to Baltimore 4448’N 4740’W a berg ~1,000′ long and 200′ high with 3 large peaks. 8 smaller bergs were nearby. Soon afterward 2 more were seen which were 400′ long and 250′ high. 2 others were seen miles to the northward.
May 4 SS “Angloman” arrived at Liverpool from Boston down by the stern after contact with ice on the voyage.
May 6 SS “Sprott” for Boston 47N 42W passed 4 large bergs.
May 12 SS “Delano” at Baltimore from Rotterdam 4640’N 4730’W a large berg.

Jul 28 Mission ship “Harmony” collided with iceberg off the coast of Labrador but minor damage [no exact position]. (EW).
