Feb 18 SS “H.A. Walker” from Carbonear to St. John’s caught in ice pack off Cape St. Francis, abandoned by crew (later set on fire and sank).
Feb 24- Mar 1 SS “Belle Isle” ice damage to forepeak affecting 5 plates and damage to propeller [no locations].
Feb 28 SS “Wop” badly damaged by ice in Placentia Bay, fired and abandoned. (PR).
Feb 28 (from St. John’s): Six vessels en route for St. John’s were still held up off the Newfoundland coast today a week after Arctic ice was driven onto the harbour. The vessels waiting are the “Dromore”, “Nova Scotia”, “Northern Ranger”, “Seneff”, “Belle Isle” and “Magnhild”.

Mar 15 SS “Magnhild” arrived St. John’s with ice damage.
Mar 25 SS “Vaga” arrived St. Johns, NB, was jammed in ice floe 200m off Newfoundland coast; 2 plates in forward section bent in and took some water.
Mar 28 SS “Yrsa” surveyed at Port aux Basques for shell damage caused by ice between St. John’s and there.

April

Apr 21 Norwegian sealing SS “Ora 2” reported leaking in 5132’N 5232’W and SS “Eagle” in 5040’N 5320’W proceeding to assist. “Ora” sank and crew picked up by the “Eagle”.
